SHAKESPEARE IGNITION PERFORMANCE LAB led by Vanguard Productions' Producing Artistic Director, Josh Pohja. This six-session summer arc, beginning Tuesday June 18th 6pm-9pm, will sharpen your instrument and re-invigorate your passion for classical text.
SHAKESPEARE IGNITION PERFORMANCE LAB offers you a dynamic & positive environment to flex your creative intelligence, nurture your artistic curiosity & collaborate alongside a network of like-minded artists. Participants will orchestrate a thematic arc based on text and character motivation to create a short public showcase and BBQ celebration. If you're passionate about innovative storytelling, and developing a positive growth mindset this class is for you.

SHAKESPEARE IGNITION PERFORMANCE LAB is a partnership with Vanguard APEX Education to provide professional quality training to the Milwaukee arts community. SHAKESPEARE IGNITION PERFORMANCE LAB is a six-week classical theatre laboratory focused on sharpening your creative intelligence through extensive scene analysis, physical dynamics and character excavation. The six-class arc culminates in a scene thread of Shakespearean themes or plots with a public invited final presentation.

JOSHUA POHJA (he/him/jp) is co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of Vanguard Productions and Ignition Performance Labs most recently helming An Enemy of the People for First Stage Young Company. He has directed two of Vanguard's acclaimed iterations of All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 and 2024's Antigone at The Calvary starring Gregory Linington and Chantae Miller. For five years, he was the Education Programs Coordinator for Milwaukee Repertory Theater teaching and re-imaging the curriculum for its Basic Acting 1-III series. He has taught Shakespeare, Voice/Speech, Movement and Viewpoints for the Guthrie On-Tour and Acting Company On-Tour Education programs. Joshua is a Dean's List graduate of the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama during the residency of the Moscow Art Theatre; Anatoly Smeliansky, Andrei Șerban, Natalia Fedorova, as well as Bulgarian director Mladen Kiselov, Ibsen Scholar Brian Johnston, Victoria Santa Cruz, Gregory Lehane, Don Marinelli, and Don Wadsworth. These scholars and teachers shaped his love for re-imagining classical theatre. Joshua is also a proud graduate of the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and alumni of the Saratoga International Theatre Institute (SITI) at Skidmore College under the guidance of Anne Bogart and the SITI Company.
